I Make More Money When I Write About Medium | by Teri Radichel | Bugs That Bite | Oct, 2023

It’s ironic, but true

I’ve been evaluating my Medium stats over time. It’s kind of funny that I get the biggest responses to some stories I write about Medium when that is not really my focus. I write about cybersecurity. But I note things that I notice over time and make requests to Medium through this blog where I report errors, feature requests, and related issues I run across while using products and services.

Even though it seems like those stories have a very short lifespan— they ironically seem to get the most claps. I don’t promote them so maybe that’s why they don’t get as much traction, and as I’ve already written I sent much more traffic to Medium than Medium sends to my blog posts at the time of this writing.

I am not sure writing a blog will ever be a viable source of income. I write this blog for other reasons, but it would be nice if somehow Medium could crack this nut. People make money off books — why not a blog?

I don’t think paying for claps or comments is the answer as that is not related to what drives revenue for the company. Claps are an interesting way to track sentiment, but not necessarily a good gauge of what drives revenue for Medium as a company.

As for authors who are trying to figure out the best way to make money from a blog, I watched a video on blogging and making money off your blogs that reported on who is making significant income and it is people who are offering or selling other services — not the blog itself. That’s kind of my scenario. But I do hope the blog helps improve cybersecurity across the industry. This is my primary blog.

I just find it pretty much comical that the stories that get traction and claps and hits are from other Medium authors who are trying to find a viable way to earn a living from writing. And that pays me even though those people are likely already paying Medium customers with the rule…
